Methadone Clinics

Physicians in USA are not permitted to prescribe Methadone as treatment or maintenance for opioid addiction. Methadone maintenance programs are special programs run with government assistance (funding), by organizations contracted to provide this service.

Physicians are permitted to prescribe Methadone for pain management.

Due to Methadone being implicated in increased number of deaths in recent years, most physicians are reluctant to prescribe it, even though most of these deaths have been from non-prescription usage.

Methadone for opioid addiction can only be dispensed by approved Methadone clinics.

Methadone Clinics are operated under federal and state regulations. The primary purpose in operating these clinics is to reduce criminal activity surrounding opioid usage. The state realizes that opioid addiction will not go away, and provides a safe and legal avenue to obtain Methadone as a substitute drug for various forms of opioid addiction.

  • Methadone clinics dispense Methadone ... they do not prescribe Methadone.
  • Patients can not get a prescription for Methadone from them.
  • The patient has to go to the clinic practically everyday to obtain it.
  • The dosing hours are restricted to morning hours.
  • These clinics charge $10 to $15 for each visit. There is no additional cost for the medication.
  • Some offer a fee schedule based on a sliding scale depending on income.
  • Some also offer Suboxone/Subutex.
  • These programs include addiction counseling and urine drug screen without an additional charge.

There are very few such clinics in the state, and these are almost always located in major cities.
